Schools out at Zippo's

From World's Fair magazine, July 16-22, 2010

The recent visit of Zippo's Circus (Phoenix Unit) to Leyland and Blackburn gave us the opportunity to introduce school children who have enjoyed circus workshops in their school to experience the joys of circus. For a number of them, this was the first time in the big top

With the enthusiastic help of David Hibling, Chris Barltrop and Jan Eric Brenner, around 50 pupils from Leyland's Manor Road School and Blackburn's St Francis Primary School were treated to a workshop session with the artists in the circus ring.

Upon arrival, Jan led the groups in a merry dance around the tent and made everyone feel very comfortable and at home. Jan, as Fips the Clown, explained what they would be doing and introduced the artists. Hula-hoop, plate spinning, diabolo and juggling were demonstrated and explained while several artists showed the skills thay they use in their performances.

The children and grown-ups had a great time, wonderful memories for all but particularly the chidren aged 6-11. Many of the children came to see the show later in the week so that their families could see their 'friends' perform.

Serving as a valid introduction to live theatre for some young people, the visit has given them an experience they will remember for a long time.
